A place full of the scent of traditional culture

Andong Hahoe Village is a symbolic place where traditional Confucian culture of Korea is alive and breathing. It is a clan village that preserves the most Korean and original culture.
Hahoe Village is also a place where people continue to live a healthy community life through mutual understanding and communication based on the Korean people’s view of adapting to nature and communicating with each other.

The 34th UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Brazil in July 2010, has confirmed the registration of Hahoe Village as a World Heritage site, judging that the diverse living culture that has been passed down by villagers is now worth keeping beyond Korea.
Korean same-family name village for 600 years

Andong Hahoe Village is a representative Korean same-family name village where Pungsan ‘ryu’ has lived for 600 years, and Waga(tile-roofed house) and Choga(straw roofed house) have been well preserved despite their long history.

In particular, it is famous as the birthplace of Ryu Un-ryong, a scholar of Joseon Dynasty, and Ryu Seong-ryong, a brother who served as Yeonguijeong(prime minister) during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.
Nakdong River flows around the village in an S shape

The name of the village Hahoe originated from the Nakdong River, which flows around the village in the shape of an “S.”
Hahoe Village was already famous as the best place to live since the Joseon Dynasty.
On the east side of the village is a flower mountain 271 meters above sea level that stretches out from Mount Taebaek, and stretches to the west end of the village as the mountain’s stem forms a low hillside, and the site of the 600-year-old zelkova tree is the highest center in the village.
The houses in Hahoe Village are not uniformly oriented because they are arranged toward the river around the zelkova tree.

This is quite contrast to the fact that houses in other Korean villages are heading south or southeast.
It is also characterized by the fact that the surrounding grasslands are arranged in a circle around the big tile-roofed house.
Experience Hahoe Village

In Hahoe Village, “Hahoe Mask Dance Drama Performance” which was played by ordinary people, and “Seonyujulbulnori (Traditional Fireworks)” which used to be a folk festival of Seonbi, are still being carried on to this day, and cultural heritages that show the nation’s traditional life culture and ancient architecture are well preserved.
