One of the most famous places for foreigners in Seoul, our market, the Gwangjang Market, where tradition and culture are melted. Gwangjang Market is full of people and food. Seoul’s first permanent traditional market? Is it? Anyway, it is a traditional market with 100 years of history. I don’t know when it was renewed, but it is a clean and well-organized market with a complete remodeling of the interior to match the 10 million foreign tourists era.
When you think of Gwangjang Market, you think of food first. The mung bean pancake comes to mind, and there are so many representative street foods such as beef tartare, kalguksu(noodle soup), bibimbap, dumpling, etc. Among them, I visited the Kalguksu restaurant from Netflix’s original “Chefs on the Road.” The restaurant is called “Hometown Kalguksu” near the south gate of Gwangjang Market. It’s located on the corner of the street, so it’s always crowded with people because its spot is good and the taste is good. It is a simple and reliable menu.
The menu is simple. Handmade noodle(Kalguksu) and dumplings are the main dishes. They make and sell their own dumplings, and they also make their own dough, boil it on the pot, and serve it to the guest. It’s very busy as a team. They boil noodles, boil broth, boil dumplings, serve dishes to guests, and arrange their seats.
Although the price range is slightly higher than other traditional markets, it still has more advantages than disadvantages to enjoy the atmosphere and the unique flavor and taste of Gwangjang Market.
