Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do

Description:
Pocheon Art Valley was a former quarry transformed into a culture and arts space. The transformation was the outcome of Korea’s first environment restoration project
Pocheon Art Valley’s Sick Wounds
It was the late 60s when expansion of domestic construction industries began with modern industrialization.

During this time, the stones produced in rock mountain in the Seoul metropolitan area were used for road pavement, building enclosures and interior materials.

Pocheon Stone, which was produced in Pocheon, was widely used as a building material for Korea’s representative buildings because of its rigid material and beautiful granite patterns.
Pocheon granite was used not only in the restoration of Cheonggyecheon Stream and Gwanghwamun Restoration Project, but also used as a construction materials to build Blue House, the National Assembly building, the Supreme Court, the National Police Agency, Incheon International Airport, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and many other state buildings.

However, the beautiful Pocheon Mountain, where the quarry was over, was cut off and forgotten in ruins.
Destruction of the environment and the hideous view of the waste land have been the cause of undermining the city’s image.
