Tongyeong is a place with special sentiments and culture. As well as the beautiful and clean natural environment, it is also the center of the Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park, and is known as the Great Battle of Hansan, a shining battleground in the history of the world’s naval battles.
It is known to many people as Korea’s only submarine tunnel, canal, and Chungmu Gimbap, a unique food. In addition, Dongpirang Mural Village has emerged as a tourist attraction in Tongyeong. As you can see from the name of the village, which means ‘A cliff on the east’, Dongpirang is a village that sits on a steep hillside.

Dongpirang is decorated in colorful colors throughout the village. You can enjoy walking through narrow alleys while looking at murals with various and interesting paintings. A person who has a good sense of emotion may be under the illusion of walking through a fairy tale scene. If lovers visit here, they will naturally feel the urge to walk slowly with their arms crossed.
Dongpirang was an ordinary mountain village on the verge of demolition a few years ago. But meeting with a civic group changed its fate. In 2007, ‘Tongyeong 21’, a civic group working in Tongyeong, implemented the Dongpirang Coloring Project, and it was surprisingly successful.
Painters and art students quickly decorated Dongpirang as a “Fairy Village.” With this, Dongpirang was transformed into a tourist attraction that was treated as a valuable overnight.
The most distinctive feature of Dongpirang mural is that it is not bound by the fixed frame. Various structures that make up all parts of the village appear as the background in the painting. Bicycles, small windows, and water tanks on the roof become part of the painting naturally.
These murals not only provide a spectacle, they lead a new form of cultural movement. Such attempts continue in Europe, which leads the flow of new art and culture. For example, the Paris Orsay Museum, remodeled from the train station, and the Tate Modern Gallery in London, remodeled from a thermal power plant.
Dongpirang expects to continue to maintain its reputation. It’s hard to climb up and down the slope, but it’s a famous place worth visiting on purpose. Near Dongpirang, there are Jungang Market, a fish market representing Tongyeong, Chungmu Gimbap Street, and Nammangsan Sculpture Park. In Dongpirang, you can see Tongyeong city, sea and Tongyeong port at a glance.
